Kent Roach and Kerry Wilkins receive TRC Teaching Awards from Students' Law Society and Indigenous Law Students' Association
Kent Roach and Kerry Wilkins are the first recipients of the TRC Teaching Award from the Students’ Law Society and the Indigenous Law Students’ Association.
Launched last year, the award recognizes professors who have made an outstanding contribution to the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s call to action #28 by teaching course content involving Indigenous perspectives, topics, and law, as well as Canadian Aboriginal Law.
All students enrolled in ˾ֱ’s JD program were eligible to nominate and vote for the recipients of the award. Roach was named the full-time faculty recipient; Wilkins the adjunct faculty recipient.
Roach served as volume lead for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Report on the Legacy of Residential Schools. He has also been a member of Canadian Council of Academies expert panel on Indigenous policing. Wilkins teaches an Aboriginal Law practicum and a course on Indigenous Peoples and Canadian Law.
Jesse Stirling, the leader of the Indigenous Law Students’ Association, thanked the winners for their outstanding teaching: “We are grateful for your dedication to students and to furthering the Faculty of Law’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.”
