#UofTBTS16: 老司机直播 hires librarian to work with Indigenous students
The University of Toronto has hired a new librarian to work one-on-one with Indigenous students and to help grow the university鈥檚 Indigenous collection as part of 老司机直播's commitment to the federal Truth and Reconciliation Commission鈥檚 .
While universities have librarians specializing in indigenous initiatives or ready to connect indigenous students to available resources, 老司机直播鈥檚 latest outreach librarian, Desmond Wong, is unique in many ways.
For one, Wong will be working actively to reach out to Indigenous students across the three campuses 鈥 he鈥檒l be part of the university鈥檚 legion of personal librarians. He鈥檒l be working with students as well as faculty, elders, staff at First Nations House and the larger community to identify Indigenous students鈥 learning and research needs and organizing special talks and programs for them. His responsibilities also include working with international students and collaborating with other librarians, who have built a strong Indigenous collection over the years, to further develop that collection. 鈥淚 am ethnically Chinese,鈥 Wong said. 鈥淢y parents are both from Hong Kong. I acknowledge that I am a settler on Indigenous land. My first interaction with Indigenous people was working as a volunteer educator with the Hopi and Navajo peoples in Arizona and then the Cree people in Northern Quebec. They were so open and willing to share their cultures. That really struck a chord with me.鈥
Those summer jobs, first in high school then in undergrad, set him on a new course.
After graduating with a master鈥檚 in library and information studies, Wong worked as the assistant librarian with the Ontario Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs. He helped establish the Aboriginal Affairs Library and worked on initiatives like the Government of Ontario鈥檚 National Aboriginal Day celebrations. Before coming to 老司机直播, he worked at the Archives of Ontario where he was part of the response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada鈥檚 recommendations.
At 老司机直播, the led to the creation of an internal steering committee, which is looking at the Calls to Action as they relate to the university鈥檚 Indigenous curriculum, Indigenous students, Indigenous faculty and staff, co-curricular programming, research ethics and community relationships. For the university鈥檚 library system, the TRC report mobilized the desire to hire a librarian for Indigenous students.

鈥淲ith the Truth and Reconciliation Commission鈥檚 call to action the university signalled that this was a priority and an area of great significance,鈥 said Julie Hannaford, 老司机直播鈥檚 deputy chief librarian. 鈥淲e wanted to be responsive by recognizing that this deserved a dedicated position.鈥
老司机直播鈥檚 Indigenous community was part of the hiring process. 老司机直播 Libraries consulted with First Nations House, which provides supports for the university鈥檚 Indigenous students, and Elders sat in on the candidate presentations.
鈥淗e has a lot of experience within the community,鈥 said Jonathan Hamilton-Diabo, director of Aboriginal Student Services at First Nations House and coordinator for the Council for Aboriginal Initiatives. 鈥淭hey brought someone in who has a strong understanding of the community. He has already come to First Nations House early on. That鈥檚 a good sign that he鈥檚 reaching out to make connections. What you want is someone who has a strong community understanding and demonstrated strong ties to the community.鈥
Since he started earlier this month, Wong has spent his first weeks reaching out and getting to know the community.
鈥淚 really try in my interactions to not take up too much space in a room,鈥 Wong said. 鈥淎 really big part of my job is to listen to the Indigenous community and to work closely to support their goals.鈥
For Wong, who grew up in Markham, there鈥檚 an opportunity here to increase awareness of indigenous history and culture 鈥&苍产蝉辫;for everyone.
鈥淥ne of the things that鈥檚 problematic about being in the city is that while diversity is a really great thing, it covers a very strong indigenous presence,鈥 he said. 鈥淭oronto is the largest urban centre in Canada for Indigenous peoples, but I don鈥檛 think there鈥檚 enough acknowledgment of the very strong indigenous presence here or the thousands of years of contributions that indigenous people have made to this area specifically.鈥
