The University of Toronto is the top university in Canada for spurring innovation, according to the latest Maclean’s national reputational rankings.

The annual ranking compares universities’ reputations based on the results of a survey conducted by the magazine of university faculty, senior administrators and business people across the country.

“We’re thrilled that the University of Toronto has been recognized for its efforts to foster a climate of innovation and entrepreneurship alongside its reputation for world-class research and academics,” said Ted Sargent, ��˾��ֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“One of ��˾��ֱ��'s strengths is creating opportunities for researchers and students to move their discoveries out of the university into the real world where they can make a difference in people's lives.”

Overall, ��˾��ֱ�� held onto first place in the Maclean’s reputational rankings for the sixth year running. In addition to innovation, it received top marks in categories related to quality and producing “leaders of tomorrow.”

The other Canadian universities ranked in the top five overall by reputation were the University of British Columbia, the University of Waterloo, McGill University and McMaster University, respectively.

��˾��ֱ�� placed second behind McGill in separate list of the best medical doctoral universities published by Maclean’s.

��˾��ֱ�� has a long and rich history of ground-breaking research going back 200 years, Maclean’s notes. That includes the invention of the electric wheelchair, alkaline battery, IMAX and insulin.

Today, the university is also home to a vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship scene that has helped fuel Toronto’s recent tech boom, which has resulted in new jobs and investment. The 2019 annual report of ��˾��ֱ��’s Division of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation noted that there were 180 invention disclosures, 250 commercialization projects, 75 priority patent applications and 35 licensing and option agreements at the university in the year prior.

��˾��ֱ�� entrepreneurs, meantime, have created 500 startups in the last 10 years and secured more than $1.5 billion in investment. Most of these startups are student-led.

Companies led by ��˾��ֱ�� graduates and faculty are regularly in the news, Maclean’s says, citing BlueDot, the AI software company that was the first to warn the world of the COVID-19 pandemic.

��˾��ֱ�� was also recognized by Reuter’s last year in their ranking of the most innovative universities in the world. ��˾��ֱ�� was ranked first in Canada in that list and 27th globally, up 19 spots from 2017.

“��˾��ֱ�� is proud to support its researchers and entrepreneurs as they look to turn their ideas into reality,” said Derek Newton, assistant vice-president, innovation, partnerships and entrepreneurship.

“Through successful partnerships with industry, intellectual property protection and its many startup accelerators, ��˾��ֱ�� helps innovators each step of the way.”

The University of Toronto has been ranked first in Canada by Maclean’s magazine in the research-intensive medical and doctoral category.

The annual ranking, released this week, saw ��˾��ֱ�� move up one spot in the important category – which ranks research-focused universities with a broad range of graduate-level programs, including PhDs – and tie for first place with Montreal’s McGill University.

��˾��ֱ�� was also ranked by Maclean’s as the Canadian school with the best overall reputation – a position it has occupied in the ranking for four straight years.

“We’re pleased to see the University of Toronto recognized for its strength in the medical and doctoral category,” said ��˾��ֱ�� President Meric Gertler.

“In fact, in the major global university rankings, ��˾��ֱ�� is routinely ranked as one of the world’s top research-intensive institutions and in the top 10 public universities on the planet.”

��˾��ֱ��’s performance in the Maclean’s 2019 ranking in the medical and doctoral category was due to its first-place position in several key metrics, including faculty awards, medical and scientific grants and the total amount of research dollars it is awarded.

The University of British Columbia was ranked third in the same category, while Hamilton, Ont.’s McMaster University was ranked fourth.

The Maclean’s ranking was released on the same day as a global ranking of the world’s most innovative universities by information technology giant Thomson Reuters. That ranking saw ��˾��ֱ�� jump 11 spots to 35^th in the world – and No. 1 in Canada – when it comes to advancing science and inventing technologies that “power new markets and industries.”

Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University took the top three spots in the Reuters ranking, which was generally dominated by U.S. schools. The only other Canadian school to rank in the top 100 was UBC, which captured 61^st place.

The Reuters innovation ranking is based on metrics like patent volume, patent citations and the number of scientific articles written in collaboration with industry. The global list is limited to universities that filed more than 70 patents to the World Intellectual Property Association during a five-year period.

One of the world’s top research universities, ��˾��ֱ�� is increasingly focused on moving its discoveries and knowledge out of the lab and into the real world. Since 2010, ��˾��ֱ�� has filed more that 400 patent applications and negotiated over 250 license agreements. It has also partnered with hundreds of corporations over the past decade and launched more than 500 startup companies that have collectively generated more than $1 billion in investment.

Overall, ��˾��ֱ�� continues to be the highest ranked Canadian university and one of the world’s top-ranked public universities in the five principal international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University.

If you want to know which Canadian university has the best reputation among business leaders, guidance counsellors and fellow professors, the answer is the University of Toronto, Maclean's says.

For its annual ranking of Canada’s top institutions of higher learning, the storied magazine conducted a cross-country reputational survey, which placed ��˾��ֱ�� in the No.1 spot.

The influencers participating in the survey also named a ��˾��ֱ�� degree as the “highest quality” of all universities surveyed in Canada and its students as the No.1 “leaders of tomorrow.” The university also placed second in the most innovative university category.

Regularly named the top Canadian university and among the top 10 global public universities by international surveys – including this week’s U.S. News & World Report rankings – ��˾��ֱ�� placed second overall in the Maclean's medical doctoral category, which ranked universities with a broad range of PhD programs and research, as well as medical schools. Other schools in the category included McGill University, the University of British Columbia, McMaster University and the University of Alberta.

“Canada is fortunate to have a number of strong universities. We’re proud that the value of a University of Toronto degree and the experience of our students learning from some of the top minds in the world is one of the reasons we consistently rank among the very best in the world,” said Vivek Goel, ��˾��ֱ��’s vice-president of research and innovation.

To compile results for its 26th annual survey, Maclean's used five factors (students, faculty, resources, student support and reputation) based on 14 performance indicators. Each indicator was allocated a weight percentage. For example, reputation was worth 15 per cent of the overall score, while nine per cent was allocated to library services and resources.

In addition to its reputation survey results, ��˾��ֱ�� was also at the top in faculty awards, medical and science grants, citations and total research dollars.

The magazine’s methodology differs from global rankings. It highly weights input measures and focuses more on undergraduate student measures.

��˾��ֱ�� has done well this year in several international rankings:

21st on this week’s U.S. News & World Report rankings
22nd on the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) annual rankings of the top universities in the world
32nd in the QS World University Rankings
27th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) report by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Macleans magazine released its 2015 university rankings on Oct. 28, placing ��˾��ֱ�� first in such categories as Faculty Awards, Reputation, Medical/Science Research Grants, Citations and Total Research Dollars.

The magazine groups universities into three categories: medical/doctoral (for institutions hosting a broad range of PhD programs, research and medical schools); primarily undergraduate and comprehensive. In the category of medical/doctoral, Macleans ranked the top three universities in Canada as McGill, ��˾��ֱ�� and UBC.

Macleans ranked ��˾��ֱ�� #1 for reputation (followed by UBC and McGill) across all categories of universities, based on its survey of business people, high school guidance counsellors and university faculty and senior administrators across the country. Respondents were asked to assess universities' reputation for innovation, quality and “leaders of tomorrow”.

“The specific results for ��˾��ֱ�� are in the same range as results from previous years,” said Marny Scully, assistant vice-president, government, institutional and community relations. “In the most prestigious international rankings from this year – Times Higher Education, National Taiwan University, Shanghai and US News & World – the University of Toronto placed first in Canada in each ranking and between third and 25th in the world, again consistent with previous years.”
