Most of them said they declined to publish accounts of same-sex sexual behaviour because they felt the behaviour was an anomaly too rare to be worth reporting, or wasn鈥檛 a research priority of their lab.

These results suggest that the paucity of reports of same-sex sexual behaviour among mammals is attributable to a bias against anecdotal evidence.

鈥淲e realized some species we had observed engaging in same-sex behaviour were not included in other published reports and we wondered how often other researchers were witnessing it and also not publishing,鈥 says study co-author Karyn Anderson, a PhD candidate in 老司机直播 Scarborough鈥檚 department of anthropology. 鈥淲e decided the best way to get at this information was to go directly to the source.鈥

Karyn Anderson is completing her PhD thesis on the Rwenzori colobus monkey (supplied image)

Researchers surveyed for the study said they had seen same-sex behaviour (defined as mounting or other genital contact) in nearly 80 per cent of the 54 species they completed surveys on, which ranged from monkeys to elephants. Yet, about 80 per cent of the researchers never published their data.

There were even 17 species on which there was no research stating that they engaged in same-sex behaviour even though experts witnessed it.

鈥淪ome respondents reported observing encounters that lasted close to an hour, while others said they had only seen it a few times or very briefly in many years of observation,鈥 says Anderson, who is completing her PhD in the lab of Associate Professor Julie Teichroeb.

When asked why they chose not to collect or publish their findings, none of the researchers reported a discomfort with homosexuality or any prejudice against it.

The study collected demographic information on its respondents too, though nothing was found to impact likelihood of recording or reporting, including their career stage, the animals they studied, and whether they identified as part of the LGBTQS+ community.

A quarter of the respondents said they didn鈥檛 report same-sex sexual activity because they had other research goals they needed to prioritize or because they weren鈥檛 leading the studies and didn鈥檛 determine what was included.

Responses also backed the theory that popular ideas about the role of same-sex behaviours have led researchers to lump it into other categories in their data collection, with many recording it as instances of establishing dominance, playing or creating social bonds. Only 22 per cent of respondents classified it as a unique behaviour.

Most researchers reported they chose not to record or report because existing evidence on same-sex sexual activity is too dominated by eye-witness accounts.

Anderson notes the bias is a feature of Western approaches to wildlife biology, pointing out that Japanese primatologists, for example, tend to place more importance on researchers鈥 narrative accounts than their Western counterparts.

鈥淎t some point anecdotes were no longer considered rigorous enough for some publications, but they can tell us important things about overarching trends,鈥 Anderson says. 鈥淥ne monkey engaging in same-sex behaviour isn鈥檛 necessarily going to tell us a lot about its evolution or function, but if all animals engage in it, that鈥檚 a whole different story.鈥

The study notes that other misconceptions of 鈥渞are鈥 behaviours have been disproven once researchers began studying them in a more structured, formal way 鈥 such as when wild chimpanzees were found to feed their young by chewing up and spitting out their food, akin to birds.

鈥淚 hope this encourages scientists to publish on their observations of behaviours that they perceive to be rare,鈥 Anderson says.

News home page banner

Off

Wed, 17 Jul 2024 16:44:44 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 308467 at After almost losing her mother, 老司机直播 grad dedicates herself to understanding brain disorders /news/after-almost-losing-her-mother-u-t-grad-dedicates-herself-understanding-brain-disorders After almost losing her mother, 老司机直播 grad dedicates herself to understanding brain disorders

Christopher.Sorensen Fri, 06/21/2024 - 15:16

Cutline

Olivia Hawco, whose research seeks to understand and treat brain disorders, is graduating from 老司机直播 Scarborough with an honours bachelor of science degree and plans to become a clinician-scientist (photo by Don Campbell)

Alexa Battler

Topic

Our Community

Convocation 2024

Brain

Research & Innovation

老司机直播 Scarborough

Subheadline

鈥淭he only thing I wanted when I was a little girl was for my mom to be OK. She was given a 50 per cent chance of surviving.

Doctors couldn鈥檛 operate or intervene, so they transferred her to another hospital for more tests. Miraculously, they found the bleeding in her brain had spontaneously healed itself.

鈥淚 remember the neurologist saying, 鈥榊our mom won the lottery,鈥欌 says Hawco, who is graduating from the University of Toronto Scarborough with an honours bachelor of science degree and plans to become a clinician-scientist. 鈥淭he only thing I wanted when I was a little girl was for my mom to be OK. And I want that for other people, too.鈥

Her mother鈥檚 recovery was difficult. She was hospitalized for a week and had to relearn how to walk. Doctors never figured out how she healed herself so suddenly, or why her only lasting symptom was minor difficulties with short-term memories.

The harrowing experience ignited Hawco鈥檚 lifelong passion to understand and treat brain diseases 鈥 and ultimately prevent them from happening in the first place.

At age 16, Hawco began volunteering at the Markham Stouffville Hospital, where her mom was initially treated. She started in the gift shop as a cashier and worked her way through the wings, assisting with CT scans, cardiology and oncology, and eventually helping in the same ICU where her mother almost died.

It was difficult to be back in that space, Hawco says, but that only made her more certain she was on the right path.

She later enrolled at 老司机直播 Scarborough to pursue a specialist in human biology and, in her third year, took a course taught by Assistant Professor Kathlyn Gan in the department of biological sciences. Hawco grew fascinated with Gan鈥檚 neuroscience research and eventually landed a position in Gan鈥檚 lab, where she has remained ever since.

鈥淎lthough she joined my lab with no prior research experience, Olivia quickly grasped a wide variety of sophisticated experimental techniques that can elude experienced trainees,鈥 Gan says. 鈥淣otably, she designed and executed her own undergraduate research project from scratch, systematically troubleshooting and optimizing her own experiments.鈥

Hawco is investigating neurons, the cells responsible for transmitting information around the brain. More specifically, she鈥檚 studying how neurons communicate by linking to one another through connections called synapses. Synapses degrade over time, leading to many of the aspects of aging that people dread, including memory loss, cognitive decline and dementia.

For her undergraduate thesis, Hawco focused on a protein called SLIT1, which guides neurons to their proper place during early brain development. Hawco suspected SLIT1 could also be impacting the way neurons connect to one another. By working backwards, Hawco is examining how the brain first forms to hopefully create a drug or treatment that can help a damaged brain reform.

鈥淚f you're able to form synaptic connections and prevent neuronal death sooner after a stroke, you wouldn't have the same detrimental side effects,鈥 she says. 鈥淢aybe that can prevent some of the cognitive decline we see.鈥

Her work earned her the prestigious NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award last year and she will be supported by the NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship 鈥 Master鈥檚 Program as she prepares to build on her data and embark on more experiments during her master鈥檚 degree this fall. She also won the 老司机直播 Excellence Award to support her research this summer.

Along with her family, Hawco credits the support she received from her mentors in the department of biological sciences, including Gan and faculty members Aarthi Ashok and Emily Bell. It shouldn't be this painful or scary or sketchy.鈥

Driving schools are appealing to new drivers because they issue beginner driver education certificates, which make new drivers eligible for insurance discounts and lets them take their road tests sooner. To receive one, students must complete 10 hours of in-car driving lessons, 10 hours of homework and 20 hours of classroom learning in-person or virtually.

Many Ontario driving schools are small businesses using little technology, Castaldo says, and tracking everything on pen and paper means information can fall through the cracks.

Kruzee, by contrast, is instead digitizing the experience: all learning except in-car lessons is done online, meaning a student鈥檚 progress is tracked automatically and there鈥檚 no faking whether they鈥檝e finished the classwork or homework.

Kruzee co-founders Mikael Castaldo (left) and Osama Siddique (right) both have backgrounds in management (supplied image)

Castaldo and co-founder Osama Siddique, who earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business administration from 老司机直播 Scarborough in 2017, have brought similar accountability to in-car lessons, which has also helped them combat a frustration they鈥檝e seen often in their research and experienced themselves.

They found that 80 per cent of Yelp reviews for prominent Ontario driving schools were negative and largely hinged on the process of booking in-car lessons. In many reviews, students recount scheduling lessons by texting or calling an instructor and then hoping both parties remembered when and where the lesson would take place 鈥 not to mention how many hours of instruction had been completed.

鈥淲e were surprised that it was impossible to book lessons online, impossible to know anything about your instructor before you get in the car with them and that the theoretical part was still pretty analog,鈥 Castaldo says. 鈥淧eople complain about booking delays, last-minute cancellations, instructors ghosting them.鈥

Modernizing driver's ed

Kruzee, by contrast, allows students to use a website to browse profiles and reviews of driving instructors and provides information about which car they will be driving. They can schedule their appointments and get a text to remind them 24 hours before their lesson takes place. Instructors also record students鈥 progress and bookings through a dedicated app.

In the coming months, the company is launching a feature that will have instructors track both the hours a student has completed and their specific strengths and areas for improvement, including parallel parking or lane changes. The data will be used to create a custom report card, which instructors can use to further customize lessons.

Kruzee has also created a rigorous process to screen instructors, including extensive background checks and three rounds of interviews. It also conducts regular checks of the operation.

The digital-first approach has helped keep costs low and the company has partnered with two Canadian startups to offer further discounts. For example, Kruzee students get $500 off their first used car bought through Clutch, which lets customers buy a car online, have it delivered to their house, drive it for 10 days and, if it鈥檚 not the right fit, return it free of charge. Students can also compare insurance rates with five free quotes from Walnut Insurance.

In addition, Kruzee has a course to prepare students for the first written test needed to get a driver鈥檚 licence, the G1, and students who take it are given a full refund if they don鈥檛 pass on their first try.

So far, the startup has expanded across Ontario and into British Columbia 鈥 and has sights set on entering the huge U.S. market.

鈥淲e've been getting a pretty phenomenal response so far in Vancouver, because people are facing the same problems there, and we know it's a similar experience throughout the U.S.,鈥 Castaldo says. 鈥淲e鈥檝e created a model that gives driving instructors and students what they're looking for 鈥 but better.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 09 May 2024 18:37:41 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 307808 at Domes near Highland Creek Valley offer a space to link Indigenous knowledge, community and entrepreneurship /news/domes-near-highland-creek-valley-offer-space-link-indigenous-knowledge-community-and Domes near Highland Creek Valley offer a space to link Indigenous knowledge, community and entrepreneurship

Christopher.Sorensen <time datetime="2024-04-25T16:05:35-04:00" title="Thursday, April 25, 2024 - While the study鈥檚 participants were demographically diverse, the researchers鈥 findings were consistent regardless of age, political allegiance, ethnicity or other factors.

Those who reported using the site as a way to escape their problems scored lower for well-being both after using X and overall, and were angrier and unhappier people. Frequent X users were, on average, more bored and lonelier. In addition, they felt more bored immediately after using X, although not any lonelier.

鈥淚 can relate to those findings in the sense that I tend to open social media if I鈥檓 momentarily frustrated,鈥 says Oldemburgo de Mello. 鈥淲hen I'm approaching it with this escapism mindset, it's going to be worse overall because I already have a problem.鈥

People who were more politically polarized, meanwhile, tended to retweet a lot. And the study called it 鈥減uzzling鈥 that users felt increasingly polarized when they used X for entertainment, which usually means scrolling through your feed. Users often closed X with a spike in their anger levels. They also became angrier when they used X to find information, though this wasn鈥檛 tied to any specific action.

When people went on X seeking social interaction, they tended to reply to tweets and visit profiles 鈥 and felt a boost in their sense of belonging. Researchers said the same was true when people checked trending topics.

Extensive research has quantified how much interacting with another person boosts well-being, including positive emotions such as joy. X, on the other hand, appears to be dragging users down.

鈥淚magine the magnitude of how you feel when you meet someone and you talk to them for a while, you get a little bit of a mood boost,鈥 says Oldemburgo de Mello. 鈥淭wo-thirds of that magnitude is how bad you feel when you use X.鈥

The action on X most associated with a lowered state of well-being was scrolling the feed, which is the most frequent activity on X, consuming 74 per cent of the time participants spent on the platform. She initially grew the startup out of The Hub, 老司机直播 Scarborough's early-stage entrepreneurship incubator.

SnapWrite has since enjoyed success in pitch competitions including at The Hub and The Bridge, another campus-linked accelerator of 老司机直播 Scarborough, winning around $40,000 in funding without having to give up equity. The startup has also attracted funding from big-league investors including FounderFuel, Inovia Capital and Panache Ventures.

Rastogi says the idea for SnapWrite emerged from a business she operated when she was a student. 鈥淲hile in school, I ran my own resale store and met a woman who ran a pre-loved clothing store,鈥 she says. 鈥淲hen I looked her up on Instagram, there was this endless feed of other accounts that were doing the same thing. This is a market with challenges that have not been fully addressed yet.鈥

Rastogi explains that demand for second-hand clothing is exploding, but because each pre-owned product is unique, online postings made to sell them must be too 鈥 which poses a challenge for businesses trying to keep up with growing inventory.

SnapWrite helps these businesses save on time and labour by enabling them to upload hundreds of photos at once, with the platform giving each item a detailed digital identity in about 15 seconds 鈥 a task Rastogi says would take a human worker five to 15 minutes.

What鈥檚 more, SnapWrite also integrates with major web platforms such as Shopify, Wix and Magento to automatically sync clothes鈥 attributes with websites, so that garments can be posted automatically and appear in the right place when shoppers are suggested similar products.

These features have earned SnapWrite a client base of around 50 resellers and counting, including one that has more than 35 stores. The software has digitized 25,000 items and generated more than 700,000 product attributes, saving its users upwards of 6,000 hours, according to the company.

The startup has also managed to rope clothing brands into the second-hand cycle through an initiative in which partner brands ask customers to bring used products back to their stores. These items are then run through the AI and offered to second-hand stores to resell. This model has already saved 25,000 pieces of clothing from ending up in landfills, says Rastogi.

SnapWrite鈥檚 AI generates a unique inventory number, which Rastogi envisions could enable a digital passport system of sorts for used clothing. For example, a T-shirt may get digitized by SnapWrite, sold by a thrift store, and then re-donated months later to another second-hand store that also uses SnapWrite 鈥 or uploaded to the startup's consignment platform. Even more time would be saved should the AI recognize the shirt and be able to pull up its data.

Having identified a need in the clothing market, Rastogi says she and her brother are now focused on keeping SnapWrite's momentum going. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no software in the Canadian market solving this problem in the resale market right now, so we decided to do it.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 08 Mar 2024 14:25:51 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 306615 at Experimental children鈥檚 book goes against the grain 鈥 and kids love it /news/experimental-children-s-book-goes-against-grain-and-kids-love-it Experimental children鈥檚 book goes against the grain 鈥 and kids love it

Christopher.Sorensen Wed, 01/31/2024 - 15:35

Cutline

Michael Gayle participates in a Q-and-A at a Toronto bookstore with his children鈥檚 book Krumpp鈥檚 First Taste on the shelves behind him (photo by Samar Salman)

Alexa Battler

Topic

City & Culture

老司机直播

Literature

老司机直播 Scarborough

Subheadline

Written by 老司机直播 alum Michael Gayle, Krumpp鈥檚 First Taste has a darker feel and doesn't shy away from complex words and less familiar references

A cover featuring only black text on a red background. The position comes with $8 million in research funding that will help Romero-Lankao bring her expertise to bear on how Canada, too, can bolster equity as it transitions to a net-zero carbon future.

鈥淚 think we are now in a watershed. We are moving more from the problem to the solution space,鈥 says Romero-Lankao, 鈥淲e need to focus more on who pays for what, who benefits and who bears the negative impacts so that it鈥檚 win-win.鈥

As cities around the world embark on plans to phase out fossil fuels, they鈥檙e also grappling with the fact that their most disadvantaged residents are already being left behind in the clean tech movement.

Los Angeles, for example, plans to power the entire city with clean electricity by 2035. While wealthier Californians slash their carbon footprints and energy bills by buying electric vehicles and installing solar panels, more than 16 per cent of the city's population live below the poverty line 鈥 nearly a third of these low-income households can't afford necessary amenities such as air conditioning in the sweltering climate.

Many of the report鈥檚 findings stem from Romero-Lankao鈥檚 work with community organizers to hold sessions where community members could share their lived experiences, including how past policies and programs failed them.

Key to much of Romero-Lankao鈥檚 work is recognition justice 鈥 the understanding that past energy projects left severe and ongoing damage to communities through practices like redlining (targeting marginalized areas for high-risk loans) and neglect of housing and infrastructure.

Historically, the people making the lowest incomes shoulder most of the health and socioeconomic impacts of living and working near power plants and refineries, Romero-Lankao says. She adds equity in energy transitions means concentrating the benefits in those communities, while ensuring the inevitable burdens 鈥 such as noise from wind farms or impacted property values 鈥 don鈥檛 again fall on them.

Through analysis and ongoing community feedback, Romero-Lankao and the team designed a series of measures to expand marginalized communities鈥 access to clean energy, energy-efficient and climate-controlled housing, and affordable electric transit, putting the city on track to meet all their equity goals.

The strategies build on another one of Romero-Lankao鈥檚 recent papers, published in Nature Energy, which created a framework to help governments, technology developers and other practitioners launching large-scale green energy projects to hold community dialogues that highlight and address equity issues.

鈥淭here is more to our transition than all our beautiful technological ideas; there is a decision-making that politicians and coalitions have to make differently with communities, and this reconfiguration of power is something to catalyze,鈥 she says.

Romero-Lankao has spent decades fighting to make social science an integral part of environmental work. For almost 20 years she was a social scientist for the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research. In addition to publishing 148 peer-reviewed papers, she was the co-leading author of a working group that helped create a ground-breaking assessment report that earned a Nobel Peace Prize for the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Romero-Lankao鈥檚 work as a Canada Excellence Research Chair will include centering communities in knowledge production and mobilization as she builds a data repository and toolkits to help make Canada鈥檚 net zero carbon transitions equitable. She has found that marginalized communities in Canadian cities 鈥 who spend a larger-than-average share of their incomes on energy bills 鈥 are particularly concerned about the consequences of clean energy, such as the health impacts of lithium mines, and how the workforce will change.

鈥淚 want to create a hub or a platform for us to connect our research with teaching, students, and learning from and with communities,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 want to be very experimental and risk-seeking, and ensure that we are known for doing amazing work in a couple of years.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 16 Nov 2023 20:13:11 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 304504 at
