Factor Inwentash Faculty of Social Work

Thirteen University of Toronto researchers have been named Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in recognition of their leadership, creativity and commitment to advancing academic health sciences.

One of three national academies that make up the Council of Canadian Academies, the CAHS leverages the expertise of Canada’s leading health sciences researchers to evaluate Canada's most urgent and complex health challenges and recommend strategic, actionable solutions. To be named a CAHS Fellow is considered one of the highest distinctions for academics in the health sciences field in Canada.

“The University of Toronto congratulates these leading researchers on this important recognition of their work,” says Barbara Fallon, ��˾��ֱ��’s associate vice-president, research. “This reaffirms what we saw in the recent Nature rankings, which placed ��˾��ֱ�� second in the world among health sciences research universities, and the recent NTU rankings, which placed ��˾��ֱ�� second among the world’s top research universities in the category of medicine.

“Across disciplines, fuelled by the collaboration between the 14 research hospitals in the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN), these researchers are making discoveries and advancements that have a real impact on the some of the most complex health challenges facing Canadians.”

For important work that has improved child welfare policy and practice, Professor Barbara Fallon of the Factor Inwentash Faculty of Social Work has received the President’s Impact Award.

“Children and families involved with the child welfare system have experienced violence, trauma, poverty and addictions, rooted in inequity,” Professor Fallon said. “It is with gratitude that I accept this award as we need to mobilize every resource available across multiple sectors to better understand our role in addressing these significant challenges.

“I am humbled to work in partnership with child welfare communities to advance the evidence around intervention and policy in service to children and their families.”

An internationally renowned researcher, Fallon's findings have informed organizations such as the United Nations and Canada's Senate Committee on Human Rights. Her research, which reveals stark disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children and families in the child welfare systems, represents an important contribution to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action to improve child welfare data collection on First Nations, Metis and Inuit children, youth and families.

For their impact that stretches far beyond the University of Toronto, five leaders in medicine, law, engineering, social work and the humanities are receiving President’s Impact Awards.

“The University of Toronto is very proud of these researchers, whose work is leading to important change here at home and around the world,” said Vivek Goel, ��˾��ֱ��’s vice-president of research and innovation and strategic initiatives. “Their work, across a diverse range of fields, is reaching beyond academia and improving life for a broad cross-section of society locally and globally.”

The winners are:

Winners of the President’s Impact Awards receive $10,000 per year for five years to be used toward their research, and become members of the President’s Impact Academy.
