Mak</a></strong> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.law.utoronto.ca/faculty-staff/full-time-faculty/michael-trebilcock">Michael J. Trebilcock</a> have received honorary degrees from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore, MD.</p> <p>Mak is a world-renowned cancer researcher and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a>&nbsp;in the department of immunology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and senior scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network. A geneticist, immunologist and biochemist, he “has few peers in the world of cancer research,” the citation from JHU noted.</p> <p>His breakthrough accomplishments have reshaped the field. In 1984, Mak discovered the structure of the T-cell receptor for antigens, which opened the door to developing new immunotherapy drugs. His discoveries have contributed to researchers’ understanding of immunity, particularly as it relates to cancer, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, heart disease and HIV/AIDS.</p> <p>Throughout the course of his career, Mak has contributed to more than 700 papers, received more than 65,000 citations in leading scientific journals and garnered numerous prestigious international awards, including the&nbsp;<a href="https://medbio.utoronto.ca/news/dr-tak-mak-receives-prestigious-cancer-research-award">2023 International Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Cancer Research</a>&nbsp;from the Pezcoller Foundation and the American Association for Cancer Research.</p> <p>A globally renowned legal scholar and economist and University Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Law, Trebilcock is an "internationally distinguished and pioneering scholar of the law and economics movement," the JHU citation said.</p> <p>For 50 years, he held a tenured appointment at ˾ֱ, where he founded the university's prestigious law and economics program – <a href="https://defygravitycampaign.utoronto.ca/news-and-stories/donors-endow-the-michael-j-trebilcock-law-economics-program/">which now bears his name</a> – and helped it become a global leader in the interdisciplinary exploration of law and economics.</p> <p>A prolific scholar, Trebilcock is the author of nearly 150 articles, more than 60 book chapters and 44 books.</p> <p>His many awards and honours include: Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; Engineering, and Professor <strong>John Borrows</strong>, <a href="/news/acclaimed-scholar-john-borrows-named-loveland-chair-indigenous-law-u-t-s-faculty-law">The&nbsp;Loveland Chair of Indigenous Law</a> at the Faculty of Law, are being recognized with honorary doctorates from the University of Waterloo.</p> <p>“Honorary doctorates are bestowed upon exceptional people who have contributed to the Waterloo community or to the country at large,” <a href="https://uwaterloo.ca/news/honorary-doctorates-bring-excellence-and-inspiration">the University of Waterloo said in a statement</a>.</p> <p>A leader in computational fluid dynamics for thermal designs who has made significant contributions to the field of thermal transport in nanoscale semiconductors, energy systems, EV batteries and biomedical devices, Amon served as dean of ˾ֱ Engineering from 2006 to 2019. Under her leadership, ˾ֱ Engineering became a global hub for multidisciplinary research, education and innovation, known for its strategic faculty-wide initiatives, diversity and inclusion of underrepresented groups in the engineering profession – with the percentage of women in the first-year engineering cohort increasing from 20 per cent to 42 per cent, and women faculty climbing from 19 to 56.</p> <p>Amon is an ˾ֱ Distinguished Professor in the department of mechanical and industrial engineering. A member of the Order of Canada, she has been inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Hispanic Engineer Hall of Fame, Royal Society of Canada, Spanish Royal Academy and U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He completed four degrees at ˾ֱ and was an early-career scholar with the law faculty from 1998 to 2002. His award-winning books include: <em>Recovering Canada: The Resurgence of Indigenous Law</em> (2002 Donald Smiley Award for best book in Canadian political science); <em>Canada's Indigenous Constitution</em> (2011 Canadian Law and Society Best Book Award); <em>Freedom and Indigenous Constitutionalism</em> (2016 Donald Smiley Award); and <em>Law’s Indigenous Ethics</em> (2020 Best Subsequent Book Award from the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, 2020 W. Wes Pue Best book award from the Canadian Law and Society Association).</p> <p>An Officer of the Order of Canada, Borrows is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Trudeau Fellow and a Killam Prize and Molson Prize recipient. While both Brand and Lubrin write in many forms, Brand was recognized for fiction and Lubrin for poetry.</p> <p>The author of the critically acclaimed <em>Voodoo Hypothesis</em>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbc.ca/books/canisia-lubrin-uses-the-language-of-the-past-to-explore-the-future-in-her-new-poetry-collection-1.5538588">and&nbsp;<em>The Dyzgraphxst</em>,</a> Lubrin is an instructor at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies and was also recently named poetry editor at McClelland &amp; Stewart, succeeding Brand in the role. Describing her work, the judges said:&nbsp;“Bursting beyond the confines of legibility and the individual, Canisia Lubrin summons up oceans, languages, and the self, the other, and the first-person plural, into a generous baroque project of anti-colonial plenitude.”</p> <p>“It is impossible to express what this extraordinary encouragement means, what being in such company during such a catastrophic time, will make possible,” Lubrin said in a statement.</p> <p>Alumna <a href="/news/poet-writer-activist-and-u-t-alumna-dionne-brand-receives-honorary-degree">and honorary degree recipient </a>Brand is a novelist, essayist and Toronto’s former poet laureate, whose most recent book is called <em>Theory</em>.</p> <p>“Funny, wild, and completely lacking in pretension,&nbsp;<em>Theory&nbsp;</em>takes huge formal risks, reimagining the novel of ideas for our own moment, challenging and enchanting the reader at the same time,” the judges said.</p> <p>“This is an astonishing surprise,” Brand said in a statement. “It will take me weeks, maybe months to find the best words to describe my amazement. His hundreds of publications includeThe Sage Handbook of Curriculum&nbsp;and&nbsp;Instruction and Narrative Inquiry for School-based Research.
