Now, as it prepares to host the second conference in 2023, it has more than 500 members.

As the CBSN was looking for a university partner to host the network for a five-year term, 老司机直播 Scarborough was an ideal choice. It had already been the virtual host for the first BE-STEMM conference, and as the home of the Scarborough Charter 鈥 a commitment from more than 50 Canadian universities to address anti-Black racism and to promote Black inclusion 鈥 there was a symbolic and practical alignment with the network鈥檚 goals to remove barriers facing Black researchers and practitioners in STEMM.

鈥淭his partnership enables a variety of things. The first is to raise the visibility of the network,鈥 Andrade says.

鈥淚t really advances the vision of both organizations and also aligns with the institutions that signed the charter from across the country. It鈥檚 providing essential support because although we are a virtual network, we do need some physical support 鈥 and the campus has been very generous in contributing to our operating requirements.鈥

As the inaugural president of the CBSN, Andrade has witnessed the importance of the network鈥檚 work with Black communities.

Olamide Falomo, CBSN's new program administrator, next to Maydianne Andrade at 老司机直播 Scarborough (supplied photo)

鈥淚t is a completely unique conference in Canada 鈥 and one of very few in North America 鈥 where you can hear more than one Black STEMM researcher talking about their work,鈥 she says. 鈥淚n any one place we tend to be fairly small in number, [so] that visibility is lost.

She adds the conference is an opportunity to learn about the work that Black experts in STEMM across the country are pursuing.

鈥淲e鈥檙e about research across all these different disciplines, but we鈥檙e also about change. We're really about action,鈥 Andrade says. 鈥淲e are here to get our people gainful employment, good career paths and to make sure that there are no barriers to their success.鈥

A recent immigrant to Canada, Brenda Tibingana-Ahimbisibwe was looking to return to work now that her two young children are in school. But she wasn鈥檛 hearing back from any prospective employers. Despite having trained as a medical doctor in Uganda and having a master鈥檚 in public health from the University of Manchester, she was considering leaving science behind. But after attending the CBSN conference鈥檚 virtual career fair, Tibingana-Ahimbisibwe landed a job with Statistics Canada.

鈥淲hen you come as an immigrant, you don't really have any connections. Moving here, it was just my husband and me,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 quite daunting to re-enter your field at a level that matches your skills. You do need people with insight to help you navigate. You need support.鈥

Albert Kabor茅, meanwhile, was looking to transition to civilian life after retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces when he attended last year鈥檚 career fair at the conference. Kabor茅, who has a PhD in microbiology and immunology from Laval University, credits the conference with connecting him to his current position as the manager for evaluation impact and measurements with Genome Canada.

鈥淚 would really encourage people just to take advantage of that venue to showcase themselves and to widen their networks,鈥 he says.

The conference also includes a science fair where middle school and high school students can connect with Black mentors.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important to have mentors of all sorts,鈥 Andrade says. 鈥淏ut particularly having someone who looks like you who has succeeded in this field is encouraging for youth.鈥

Andrade says that graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, research associates, people in the job market and new Canadians are interested in meeting Black scientists who have succeeded in an ecosystem that鈥檚 not always welcoming to them.

This year鈥檚 conference, BE-STEMM 2023, will feature a panel on the challenges faced by skilled Black immigrants.

While the government makes it easier for highly educated and skilled newcomers to immigrate here, it鈥檚 been well-documented that many find it difficult to find jobs in their field once they arrive. Systemic racism can make the problem even worse for Black newcomers.

鈥淏lack women are perhaps the most heavily negatively impacted,鈥 Andrade says. 鈥淭his panel is going to be a discussion about that problem 鈥 about how we can change our systems. We are progressively seeing a gap in terms of skill in our labour markets in Canada and elsewhere, and we have the people who could fill those gaps. But we have to see them where they are.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Wed, 04 Jan 2023 18:21:27 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 178787 at Shared experiences: How five international students are contributing to 老司机直播's global outlook /news/shared-experiences-how-five-international-students-are-contributing-u-t-s-global-outlook Shared experiences: How five international students are contributing to 老司机直播's global outlook

Christopher.Sorensen Mon, 10/04/2021 - 10:47

Cutline

老司机直播 Scarborough alumnus Ernest Nyarko teamed up with other 老司机直播 undergrads five years ago to create the African Impact Initiative, a non-profit organization that aims to solve problems faced by communities in Africa (photo by Jorian Charlton)

Cynthia Macdonald

Gilbert Ndikubwayezua

Matthew DiMera

Megan Easton

Topic

Our Community

老司机直播

Computer Science

Faculty of Arts & Science

Faculty of Music

Global

Joseph Wong

Lester B. In Jamaica, he often spent weekends in a student-led service club, helping to plant trees or paint schools. He soon learned about racism in the Canadian education system, including high expulsion rates and discrimination from teachers. 鈥淓ven in middle school, they understand that much more work needs to be done in Canadian society to achieve racial equity, especially for students,鈥 he says.

With respect to his own studies, Stone plans to complete a master鈥檚 and PhD in clinical psychology, and aims to gain practical experience in the field while in Canada. 鈥淧eople who are seriously mentally ill often go undiagnosed or don鈥檛 have access to proper care,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 want to help change that.鈥

鈥 Matthew DiMera

Mahak Khurmi
Hometown: Sri Ganganagar, India

Everyone knows that for mathematicians 鈥渟how your work鈥 is an important rule. High school in India, for example, had equipped her with educational concepts and strategies that she was able to share with her Canadian classmates. One expressed curiosity about the speed with which she and another Indian student could solve certain math problems. 鈥淚 told him about some of the formulas and methods taught to us, and he was very surprised and happy to learn about them,鈥 she says.

Now entering third year, Khurmi helps others understand software development and machine learning 鈥 two subjects she is passionate about. She has taught concepts in artificial intelligence to more than 300 African students through an inter-university initiative. She has also worked as a software engineering intern for a Toronto startup.

Khurmi is ultimately thinking about pursuing a PhD. This year, however, she will be helping incoming students make a smooth transition to university life.
