Amaya Perez-Brumer, an assistant professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, has received an award from the Connaught Community Partnership Research Program for her project exploring how housing challenges faced by newcomers from Latin America impact their health.

The project, titled “Donde Vivimos” – which translates to “Where We Live” – is a two-year mixed methods study led by Perez-Brumer and Michael Widener, a professor in the department of geography and planning in the Faculty of Arts & Science who is cross-appointed to Dalla Lana. The researchers will partner with the Hispanic Development Council as well as Latinx students at ��˾��ֱ�� to assess housing instability and its relationship with self-rated health and access to medical care.

“The Connaught Community Partnership grant provided our team with a unique opportunity to support a new partnership between ��˾��ֱ�� and the Hispanic Development Council by extending the impact of a recently awarded, one-year School of City Urban Challenge grant,” said Perez-Brumer.

The Connaught Community Partnership Research Program aims to help create and nurture partnerships between ��˾��ֱ�� scholars and community partners that support community-driven research.

Perez-Brumer is one of four ��˾��ֱ�� scholars to receive awards from the program this year. The others are Alicia Hawkins at ��˾��ֱ�� Mississauga, Jaris Swidrovich at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and Ishtiaque Ahmed in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Alicia Hawkins, an associate professor in the department of anthropology at ��˾��ֱ�� Mississauga and collaborators at the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation and the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation (OCF) have received a Connaught Community Partnership Research Program award for their project exploring the cataloguing and reclamation of archaeological artifacts.

Historically, archaeology in Ontario has been an extractive practice that failed to include Indigenous communities. From the 1960s to 1980s, teams of archaeologists excavated at the La Cloche site on the north shore of Lake Huron – but the work was unpublished for decades.

More than 40 boxes of artifacts are now in the care of the OCF. However, the lack of publication and comprehensive reporting of the excavations pose challenges for the OCF and Sagamok Anishnawbek, on whose lands the site is located.

To address this, Hawkins and her partners will bring together a multigenerational team of Indigenous Peoples to catalogue and interpret the artifacts. The collaboration will guide the planning and decision-making process for the site and its collections.

Hawkins is one of four ��˾��ֱ�� scholars to receive awards from the program this year. The others are Amaya Perez-Brumer at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Ishtiaque Ahmed in the Faculty of Arts & Science and Jaris Swidrovich at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.

Jaris Swidrovich, an assistant professor, teaching stream in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, has received an award from the Connaught Community Partnership Research Program for his project exploring barriers and opportunities involved in accessing HIV prevention drugs among urban Indigenous Peoples.

Many people in Canada at high risk of HIV are able to access highly effective preventive care with pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), but Indigenous Peoples face more barriers in getting the care they need.

To examine the issue, Swidrovich has partnered with community organizations in the Greater Toronto Area, including the 2-Spirited Peoples of the 1st Nations and Toronto Indigenous Harm Reduction, to host Talking Circles with Indigenous Peoples.

“We want to ensure that any folks who prescribe, suggest, dispense, monitor or follow patients on PrEP know why they’re not seeing Indigenous folks, or why they are seeing the ones who they are seeing,” Swidrovich said. “Hopefully we can provide some strategies for better knowledge, awareness, and uptake of PrEP.”

Swidrovich is one of four ��˾��ֱ�� scholars to receive awards from the program this year. The others are Ishtiaque Ahmed in the Faculty of Arts & Science, Amaya Perez-Brumer at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and Alicia Hawkins at ��˾��ֱ�� Mississauga.

Ishtiaque Ahmed, an assistant professor in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has received an award from the Connaught Community Partnership Research Program for his project exploring the use of a community-powered AI tool to tackle online hate.

Ahmed will use the award to support partnerships with the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice and the Foundation for a Path Forward to better address online hate speech aimed at Chinese and Muslim communities in Canada.

Ahmed and his partners aim to develop, deploy and evaluate a community-powered AI system to improve content moderation on social media.

“I see the impact of this award in two ways. First, it will help me enormously to build my academic program, to strengthen my relationship with the community partners here in Canada,” Ahmed said. “But I’m also excited about the real-life impact of this problem, because we are going to help these communities to handle online hate speech. To be able to make such an impact is most rewarding for me.”

Ahmed is one of four ��˾��ֱ�� scholars to receive awards from the program this year. The others are Jaris Swidrovich at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, Amaya Perez-Brumer in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Alicia Hawkins at ��˾��ֱ�� Mississauga.

Beverley Essue of the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health has received an award from the Connaught Community Partnership Research Program for a research project on prioritizing the access needs of racialized women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV).

Essue will use the award to support a partnership with the Dr. Borna Meisami Commemorative Foundation’ Restoring Smiles Initiative to address a gap in access to critical dental care that disproportionately affects racialized survivors of IPV. This research will back advocacy and program development and will prioritize equitable access to necessary and culturally appropriate dental care services.

“This Connaught grant is meaningful because it supports a community-led research partnership that will help to fill this gap and it stands to help support the pathways to economic independence and empowerment for racialized survivors,” Essue says.“The data from this project will support efforts to ensure that the perspectives and lived experiences of racialized IPV survivors can inform the implementation of the national dental care program in Canada.”

The Connaught Community Partnerships Research Program encourages collaborative research partnerships that will foster access to each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on issues of shared interest. It is intended that the partnerships supported by this program will strengthen over time.

Essue is one of four researchers at the University of Toronto to receive the award this year. The others are Andrea Charise of the University of Toronto Scarborough, Angela Mashford-Pringle of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Pedro Mateo Pedro of the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Angela Mashford-Pringle of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health has received an award from the Connaught Community Partnership Research Program for community-based participatory action research that aims to strengthen the capacity for First Nations and public health efforts in adapting to the climate-health risk of Lyme disease.

Mashford-Pringle is one of four researchers at the University of Toronto to receive the award this year. The others are Andrea Charise of the University of Toronto Scarborough, Beverley Essue of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Pedro Mateo Pedro of the Faculty of Arts & Science.

“In Indigenous research, it is imperative that you have a true and authentic relationship with your partners,” says Mashford-Pringle, who will use the program’s support to develop relationships with eight First Nations within central Muskoka.

Once a foundation of trust has been built with the university and the communities, Mashford-Pringle and PhD student Claire Hiscock will work with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and First Nations partners to study and share knowledge around ticks, Lyme disease and climate change.

“We didn't want to charge in and say,'This is what we're doing about Lyme disease,' but rather we wanted to build a partnership, see what they already know, see what they need and how we can move it forward,” Mashford-Pringle says.
