Plus, the people are great ... it鈥檚 a great place to learn, grow and network.鈥</p> <p>Fridkin spoke to <em>老司机直播 News</em> about his interest in math and computer science, plans for the future and thoughts on how students can get the most out of their undergraduate years:</p> <hr> <p><strong>How did you become interested in mathematics and computer science?</strong></p> <p>I think math is about trying to understand the world. All around, you have things going on, things happening, and math is seeing the patterns and getting a deeper understanding for what鈥檚 going on. That鈥檚 always interested me. I think it interests most people 鈥 they just don鈥檛 know that it鈥檚 called math and there鈥檚 a language for it.</p> <p>The way I did my math major is I took a bunch of courses in different fields, but the main thing that unifies them is they teach you to think about the world in different ways. You have classes about the closeness of objects, analysis, topology, you鈥檝e got to think about different types of infinities 鈥 You expand the way in which you think, and that interested me more than any specific path within mathematics.</p> <p>In terms of computer science, I really like numerical methods, where you try to approximate 鈥 given some data 鈥 and interpolate with models to predict real things. I find machine learning numerical methods really fun.</p> <p><strong>What was your approach to learning while at 老司机直播?</strong></p> <p>The number one goal for me in university was to learn how to learn 鈥 and learn how to think about new things and discover new ways of thinking. That鈥檚 the thing 老司机直播 gave me. You get the opportunity to talk to lots of different people, lots of different perspectives and learn from professors who are very experienced in the field and often have a unique way of thinking about different problems.</p> <p>Also, with the assignments, you have to push yourself and that鈥檚 what I enjoyed about it. It was a little different from high school, where an assignment might take you 30 minutes. Here, for some of the math classes, I would have to initially spend maybe a couple of days on one assignment. And I learned a lot from that. I think it鈥檚 going to impact me, not only as I go further in my career, but also in life.</p> <p><strong>What are your plans for your career and education going forward?</strong></p> <p>I鈥檓 looking for computer science roles. I want to learn from interesting people and work on interesting problems.&nbsp;That鈥檚 the main goal. I don鈥檛 have any specific field that I鈥檓 going for within computer science 鈥 just interesting problems and people who I know I鈥檒l be able to learn from and who I admire and respect.</p> <p>I really enjoy learning, but I think most learning can be done informally, on your own or with good people at a company. But certainly, if there鈥檚 something interesting that I want to learn more about and that I can鈥檛 do on my own, I would 100 per cent go back to school.</p> <p>Long term, I want to transition to something in the machine learning world.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>What would be your advice to students starting university?</strong></p> <p>I think the actual coursework is secondary to what you do in university. You should learn how to approach new problems ... For me, since I was going into math and computer science, I read a little bit of math stuff and I mostly worked on brain teaser problems. That helped me much more than any domain knowledge in any of the fields.</p> <p>As soon as you build that thought process in your head 鈥 as soon as that becomes your natural way of thinking 鈥 everything becomes so much easier.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 06 Nov 2024 20:15:18 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310248 at From AI to Atari: What it's like to work with Nobel Prize-winner Geoffrey Hinton /news/ai-atari-what-it-was-work-nobel-prize-winner-geoffrey-hinton <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">From AI to Atari: What it's like to work with Nobel Prize-winner Geoffrey Hinton</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%2810%29-crop2.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=0iRY_Amm 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%2810%29-crop2.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=ke-zpDaw 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%2810%29-crop2.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=S8-2j70q 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%2810%29-crop2.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=0iRY_Amm" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>mattimar</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-10-25T10:13:56-04:00" title="Friday, October 25, 2024 - 10:13" class="datetime">Fri, 10/25/2024 - 10:13</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>From left: Chris Maddison, Nick Frosst and Kevin Swersky at a recent event celebrating 老司机直播 University Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton's 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics (photo by Johnny Guatto)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/mariam-matti" hreflang="en">Mariam Matti</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/alumni" hreflang="en">老司机直播</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/artificial-intelligence" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; And they went beyond the physics to show how these ideas could give rise to memory, learning and generative models; concepts which are still at the forefront of modern AI research. Their ideas inspired me so profoundly that I decided to choose learning in neural networks for my own research as a graduate student. They are involved in many biological processes that are of keen interest to researchers who are developing therapeutics.</p> <p>鈥淲e haven鈥檛 been able to model the full range of conformations for peptides until now,鈥 said&nbsp;<strong>Osama Abdin</strong>, first author on the study and recent PhD graduate of&nbsp;molecular genetics&nbsp;at 老司机直播鈥檚&nbsp;Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research. 鈥淧epFlow leverages deep-learning to capture the precise and accurate conformations of a peptide within minutes.</p> <p>鈥淭here鈥檚 potential with this model to inform drug development through the design of peptides that act as binders.鈥</p> <p>The study was recently <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s42256-024-00860-4">published in the journal&nbsp;<em>Nature Machine Intelligence</em></a>.</p> <p>A peptide鈥檚 role in the human body is directly linked to how it folds since its 3D structure determines the way it binds and interacts with other molecules.</p> <p>鈥淧eptides were the focus of the PepFlow model because they are very important biological molecules and they are naturally very dynamic, so we need to model their different conformations to understand their function,鈥 said&nbsp;<strong>Philip M. Kim</strong>, the study鈥檚 principal investigator and a professor at the Donnelly Centre.&nbsp;鈥淭hey鈥檙e also important as therapeutics, as can be seen by the GLP1 analogues, like Ozempic, used to treat diabetes and obesity.鈥</p> <p>Peptides are also cheaper to produce than their larger protein counterparts, said Kim, who is&nbsp;also a professor of&nbsp;computer science&nbsp;in 老司机直播鈥檚&nbsp;Faculty of Arts &amp; Science and a professor of molecular genetics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.</p> <p>The new model expands on the capabilities of AlphaFold, the leading Google DeepMind AI system for predicting protein structure. It does this by generating a range of conformations for a given peptide. Taking inspiration from&nbsp;highly advanced physics-based machine learning models, PepFlow can also model peptide structures that take on unusual formations, including the ring-like structure that&nbsp;results from a process called macrocyclization. Peptide macrocycles are currently a highly promising venue for drug development.</p> <p>鈥淚t took two-and-a-half years to develop PepFlow and one month to train it, but it was worthwhile to move to the next frontier beyond models that only predict one structure of a peptide,鈥 Abdin said.</p> <p>There are, however, limitations given that PepFlow represents&nbsp;the first version of a new model. The study authors noted a number of ways in which PepFlow could be improved, including training the model with explicit data for solvent atoms, which would dissolve the peptides to form a solution, and for constraints on the distance between atoms in ring-like structures.</p> <p>Yet, even as a first version, the researchers say PepFlow is a comprehensive and efficient model with potential for furthering the development of treatments that depend on peptide binding to activate or inhibit biological processes.</p> <p>鈥淢odelling with PepFlow offers insight into the real energy landscape of peptides,鈥 said Abdin.&nbsp;</p> <p>The research was supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 15 Aug 2024 12:54:41 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309000 at Learning rewired: 老司机直播 researcher sparks kids鈥 interest in tech with animatronic critters /news/learning-rewired-u-t-researcher-sparks-kids-interest-tech-animatronic-critters <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Learning rewired: 老司机直播 researcher sparks kids鈥 interest in tech with animatronic critters</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-07/UofT95338_2024-04-26-Paul-Dietz_Polina-Teif-8-crop.jpg?h=235aba82&amp;itok=MkfLbn0X 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-07/UofT95338_2024-04-26-Paul-Dietz_Polina-Teif-8-crop.jpg?h=235aba82&amp;itok=CBI6GjsG 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-07/UofT95338_2024-04-26-Paul-Dietz_Polina-Teif-8-crop.jpg?h=235aba82&amp;itok=zA141Z86 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-07/UofT95338_2024-04-26-Paul-Dietz_Polina-Teif-8-crop.jpg?h=235aba82&amp;itok=MkfLbn0X" alt="Dietz holds up animatronic paper cutouts"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>bresgead</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-07-16T14:22:39-04:00" title="Tuesday, July 16, 2024 - 14:22" class="datetime">Tue, 07/16/2024 - 14:22</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Paul Dietz, a&nbsp;distinguished engineer in residence and director of fabrication in 老司机直播鈥檚 computer science department, hopes his paper animatronic creations can engage more kids in STEM through the power of storytelling&nbsp;(photo by Polina Teif)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/adina-bresge" hreflang="en">Adina Bresge</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/education" hreflang="en">Education</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/ontario-institute-studies-education" hreflang="en">Ontario Institute for Studies in Education</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/robotics" hreflang="en">Robotics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/stem" hreflang="en">STEM</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">Paul Dietz says robotic paper creations are a creative 鈥 and more inclusive 鈥 way to get kids interested in STEM fields</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Could a talking paper octopus be the key to igniting kids' curiosity about technology?</p> <p>University of Toronto engineer <strong>Paul Dietz</strong> certainly thinks so. The goal, he says, is to teach kids to use technology as a tool for storytelling, dismantling what he sees as a false divide between the arts and sciences.</p> <p>鈥淥ne of the first participants in this program was a young girl who was really into writing creative stories and really loved science. And she saw these as two conflicting parts of her world,鈥 says Dietz, who is also a faculty affiliate at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society.</p> <p>鈥淎fter what she did in animatronics, it suddenly dawned on her that you can do both. Other innovations include&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pal_Mickey">'Pal Mickey,'</a>&nbsp;an interactive plush toy that guided visitors through Disney theme parks,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwRO16n7hVA">parallel reality displays</a> that <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1b3wEsFlCY&amp;ab_channel=TUX">allow multiple viewers to see individualized content on the same screen</a>.</p> <p>Dietz says his storied career debunks the common misconception 鈥 often reinforced in schools 鈥 that creativity is exclusive to artistic pursuits, while science is the domain of strict rationality, where there are prescribed methods of inquiry to arrive at a single correct answer.</p> <p>As Dietz sees it, weaving a narrative and programming a robot are propelled by the same creative impulse 鈥 they just exercise different skills. He believes a well-rounded education should equip students with a diverse arsenal of tools to explore new ideas.</p> <p>鈥淚f you鈥檙e an artist, you have to learn the mechanics of sculpting or painting or whatever your medium is,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e should be looking at engineering and technology as those tools, and the key is 鈥 learning how to use them creatively to achieve things that are actually positive for our society.鈥</p> <p>The universal appeal of storytelling also serves to make technology accessible and exciting to kids of all ages and genders, Dietz adds.</p> <p>Bridging the gender divide in STEM has been core to Dietz鈥檚 animatronics mission since its inception.</p> <p>When his daughter was in middle school, Dietz took her to a robotics competition 鈥 but she was turned off by the contest, which seemed pointless to her. However, when the two of them worked together on an animatronic raccoon, he saw her passion for creating ignite.</p> <p>鈥淭his light bulb went off in my head: Maybe the problem isn鈥檛 that we鈥檙e doing tech,鈥 says Dietz. 鈥淢aybe kids like my daughter need to see some application that makes sense to them 鈥 like telling a story.鈥</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media It is reshaping the way we live, work, and interact with each other, and it will take experts from a broad range of disciplines to help ensure that AI is developed and deployed for the benefit of humanity, and that Canada adapts swiftly to protect our institutions," says McIlraith, who is an expert in AI safety research herself.&nbsp;</p> <p>鈥淭hreats are already upon us;
